At first glance you see a series of bold lines. Behaved and disciplined. But a closer look reveals a chain of lively circles. Effervescent and free. Designer Maija Louekari found inspiration in the texture of a woven rug that braids strips of color into circular knots that dance in single file. Räsymatto means “rag rug” in Finnish. A straight line with the heart of a circle.

Maija joined Marimekko after winning a competition in 2003 for her Hetkiä design. She has bloomed into one of company’s most popular designers. Much of her work involves hand-drawn sketches that evoke a spirit of spontaneity and freedom. Maija calls her greatest design influence the stories, books, and fairy tales she read as a kid.
