  • Overview
    • Maija Isola’s legendary Kivet pattern from 1956 builds on circles cut with scissors. The circular pattern is most likely based on the many rough-edged stones that were manually cleared from her atelier home’s grounds.

Please order carefully. Cut fabric can not be returned.

Kivet

Kivet

Maija Isola pictures a perfect circle. But it’s far from perfect. She grabs her scissors, some black paper, and cuts it to life. The shape is uneven. The edges are rough and irregular. She arranges a series of circles into rows against a white background. Their tiny flaws feel human. Hand-made. Authentic. Real. They resemble beautiful black stones. And so Kivet, Finnish for “stones,” is born in 1956. Simple. Modern. Perfectly imperfect. The sister design, Isot Kivet, is introduced in 1959. It reproduces the same pattern in a larger scale. In 2000, Maija’s daughter, Kristina Isola, expands the vision with Pienet Kivet (“small stones”). It is a condensed version of the original, with smaller and more frequent circles.
