Moments

Imagine a pattern that captures the fleeting beauty of a moment in time. Maija Louekari observes the frenetic flux of a busy Helsinki sidewalk. Hetkiä, which means “moments” in Finnish, transports us to this scene. The swift, hand-sketched drawing evokes the spontaneous and anonymous pace that makes up modern urban life. Maija won a student design competition for this design in 2003 and it became her first pattern for Marimekko. Ephemeral, transient, and beautiful, it feels like it may slip away at any moment.

Maija joined Marimekko after winning a competition in 2003 for her Hetkiä design. She has bloomed into one of company’s most popular designers. Much of her work involves hand-drawn sketches that evoke a spirit of spontaneity and freedom. Maija calls her greatest design influence the stories, books, and fairy tales she read as a kid.
